Ross McCarthy Criminal Work

YOU can’t teach an old dog new tricks but you can a dog handler. Police Review (April 27) reports on new university certificates, diplomas and degrees being awarded for canine coppers.

The dog handler’s knowledge of law and dogs is run by Middlesex University, and will account for up to a quarter of the degree.

Degrees will not be all bark and no bite, either. It is hoped that the course will enable the pooch police to become expert witnesses in cases where they have to justify in court their actions and those of their dog. It remains to be seen whether it will also help them to follow leads.
