Dog to Person Aggression

Module audience:

The module is designed for professionals working with canines in the veterinary, instructional, policing or welfare sectors.

Course aims

To understand and investigate how the domestic dog's mind works and develop strategies to help individuals deal with dog on person aggression

• Using the student's existing professional work environment to investigate a range of dog aggression characteristics

• To identify the different elements that act as triggers for dog on person aggression in the domestic environment

• Investigate how aggressive behaviour by a dog can result in its rejection by the family

• Investigate how the owner's location and family circumstances contribute to the development of dog on person aggression

• Investigate specific problems of dog aggression based on genetic differences of dogs

• Assess the implementation of different training strategies and evaluate their success in varying domestic and training class situations.

Identify different types of dog on person aggression, in particular dominance and fear

• Understand and explain how and why certain aggressive behaviours are triggered

• Use and evaluate the effectiveness of an appropriate range of equipment to assist in the control and training of aggressive dogs

• Investigate the family and/or owner situation

• Understand how early inappropriate care or conditioning can compound certain aggressions

• Analyse what effect this type of aggressive dog can have on the family situation

• Understand how dog owner's life style and circumstances influence outcomes

• Understand the basics of handling dog on person aggression and safety

• Understand a range of solutions for coping with dog on person aggression

• Assess one's own limitations and be able to decide when to refer more serious cases to other professionals

• Awareness of you and your client's legal position in relation to dangerous dogs and the law

• Develop strategies for implementation in the work environment

• Appraise the effectiveness of the new strategies

• Appraise and assess the effectiveness of equipment designed for dog on person aggression

The 4-day residential school is an intensive highly-structured programme extending the topics from their professional work environment that phase 1 was based on.

The programme includes:

• General and safety briefings

• Human and canine body language

• Use of equipment for controlling aggressive dogs

• Hands-on handling of dogs, including known aggressive dogs.

• Review and discussion sessions include video-taped handling and playback analysis

• One-to-one and group activities for peer discussion

• The programme finishes with a review of the activities and the learning experience.

• Each day will include multiple choice assessment questions to reinforce the learning experience of that day's activities.
