Advanced Practical Dog on Dog Aggression

The module is delivered in six phases
Module audience:
The module is designed for professionals working with canines
in all dog training and behaviour occupations including veterinary,
instructional, policing and welfare sectors
Normal minimum entry qualification: The
normal minimum entry qualification is that the student will
satisfy one of the following criteria
1. Passed module number CFBA1002 entitled Dog on dog aggression
- 1
2. Other relevant experience where the candidate is able
to demonstrate in interview supported by appropriate independent
references a relevant breadth of knowledge.
Course duration:
This is a work-based programme that includes self-study,
analysis, synthesis and evaluation of information and ideas,
and a compulsory 4-day intensive hands-on practical residential
school. This residential school is a core element of the module.
The module can be undertaken at any time and over any reasonable
period of time within a 12 month timeframe from initial registration.
However the successful completion of the first study phase
is an essential prerequisite before the student can proceed
to the second phase 4-day intensive residential school. The
intensive residential schools will be scheduled at specific
times during the calendar year so that students are aware
of range of deadlines to complete phase one.

support and formal taught hours is 265

Course aims
To understand and investigate how the domestic dog's mind
works and to develop strategies to help individuals deal with
dog on dog aggression
Using the student's existing professional work environment
to investigate a range of dog aggression characteristics
To identify the different elements that act as triggers for
dog on dog aggression in the home/domestic environment
Investigate how aggressive behaviour by a dog or dogs results
in its rejection by the family
Investigate how the owner's situation/location and family
circumstances contribute to the development of dog on dog
aggression
Investigate specific problems of dog aggression based on
genetic differences of dogs
Assess the implementation of different training strategies
and evaluate their success in varying home/domestic situations.

Identify different types of dog on dog aggression in particular
dominance and fear
Understand and explain how and why certain aggressive behaviours
are triggered
Use an appropriate range of equipment to assist in the control
and/or training of aggressive dogs
Understand how owners/handlers can ameliorate the psychological
stress of aggressive incidents, triggers and similar.
Investigate the family and/or owner situation
Understand how early inappropriate care/conditioning can
compound certain aggressions
Consider how an aggressive dog can affect the family situation
Understand how the dog owner's life style and circumstances
can create aggressive dogs
Understand the basics of handling dog on dog aggression
Understand a range of solutions for coping with dog on dog
aggression
Assess one's own limitations and be able to decide when to
refer more serious cases to other professionals
Awareness of you and your client's legal position in relation
to dangerous dogs and the law
Develop strategies for implementation in the work environment
Appraise the effectiveness of the new strategies
Appraise and assess the effectiveness of equipment designed
for dog on dog aggression
The 4-day residential school is an intensive highly structured
programme extending the topics from their professional work
environment that Phase1 was based on.
The programme includes:
General and safety briefings
Human and canine body language
Use of equipment for controlling aggressive dogs
Hands-on handling of dogs, including known aggressive dogs.
Review and discussion sessions include video-taped handling
and playback analysis
One-to-one and group activities for peer discussion
The programme finishes with a review of the activities and
the learning experience.
Each day will include multiple choice assessment questions
to reinforce the learning experience of that day's activities.
