Essential Skills in Recall Training

Module audience:

The module is designed for professionals working with canines in the veterinary, instructional, policing or welfare sectors.

  • Use their existing experience in a dog training environment to investigate dog training techniques

  • Identify the significant  elements that are essential for the successful training of recalls to dogs and owners

  • Investigate how the owner's situation contribute to recall inconsistency leading to high levels of risk for both dog and the public

  • Investigate specific recall problems based on the specific genetic breed of dog

  • Assess the implementation of different training strategies and evaluate their success in varying domestic situations.

Puppy/dog training

Identify potential or current  problems and the relevance of correction using training techniques
Investigate, understand and explain how and why erratic recalls are triggered
Select and use an appropriate range of equipment to assist in the control and/or training of recalls
Investigate, understand and explain the reasons for using specific recall exercises within a puppy or dog training course

Owner situations

Understand how early inappropriate care/conditioning can result in recall problems
Investigate the effect of a recall problem can have on the dog and family
Appraise and reflect on how a dog owner's lifestyle and circumstances create problem outcomes

Operating in a professional environment

Investigate and appraise a range of solutions for coping with problem recalls
Assess one's own limitations and be able to decide when to refer more serious cases to other professionals
Be aware of the individual's legal position in relation to dangerous dogs and the law
Develop strategies for implementation in the work environment
Appraise the effectiveness of the new strategies
Appraise and assess the effectiveness of equipment designed for recall training

The 1-day workshop is an intensive highly-structured programme building on the topics from their professional work environment

The programme includes:

General and safety briefings
Human and canine body language
Use of equipment for controlling dogs with recall problems
Hands-on work with dogs that have recall problems
Review and discussion sessions include video-taped handling and playback analysis
One-to-one and group activities for peer discussion
The programme finishes with a review of the activities and the learning experience.
