The Fundamentals of Primate
Conservation
PBC420
The course is designed to provide students with training
in primate behaviour, ecology and conservation. During the
course, students will learn the importance of collecting data
on the behaviour of free-ranging primates, measuring environmental
variables, including assessment of resource availability,
measuring population size, and mapping habitats accurately.
In the second half of the course, in consultation with the
instructor, each student carries out an independent research
project. Students on a similar course in the past have investigated
such topics as feeding ecology, positional behaviour, and
habitat use in the mantled howler monkey, white-faced capuchin
and black-handed spider monkey.
Note
CIPBC does not condone the private ownership of primates
as pets. Primates require professional, well-managed care.
They are susceptible to both transmitting diseases to humans
and contracting diseases from humans. People considering private
ownership of primates should seek professional advice before
making their decision.
This course is scheduled to start in 2009. Please
