The module covers the basic principles of veterinary science and how that may interact with dog behaviour and psychology. The main aim is to give the practitioner sufficient skills in knowing when to identify a behaviour problem separate to a veterinary or medical cause which may need to be seen by a veterinary surgeon. It also gives the practitioner an insight into how veterinary trained staff view behaviour in practice and the relationship between veterinary surgeon and pet behaviour practitioner.

This is an essential course for people who work with dogs in any organisation. It is also attractive for pet owners who simply want a more in depth knowledge of the domestic dogs body systems and healthcare in general in respect of problem behaviour.

Course Aims

Students will study to a basic level the different Canids and in particular The Domestic Dog. Students will explore the Veterinary needs of The Domestic Dog and its general care. They will discover how good and bad Nutrition can affect a dogs’ behaviour.

They will gain an understanding of the basic anatomy and physiology of the dog and its body systems.

Students will study basic canine genetics and how genetic conditions may affect behaviour.

To explore the different diseases and conditions that dog suffer that may affect their behaviour.

PHASE ONE – Introduction to Canids and the Domestic Dog

Detailed analysis of participants existing experience with dogs – in particular with reference to dogs and their health.

Primary research about Canids in general.

To conduct secondary research on The Domestic Dog in particular.
