Who, when, why, what, how.... covering theories and technical terms, this module gives you an insight into why we train and condition dogs the way that we do.

This course is aimed at anyone who wants to know more about the history and theory behind dog training and wants to understand what the ‘buzz’ words actually mean.

This course has been specifically written for anyone who has an interest in Dog Training, has at least 3 months experience being around dogs and would like to learn the theory behind what we do and why we do it, when training a dog.

Spread over four phases you’ll learn about how dogs learn and the various ways to condition your dog, the differences between classical and operant conditioning and what the various technical terms or ‘buzz’ words mean and when to use them appropriately.

This distance learning module, split into four phases, can be undertaken at any time and over any reasonable period within a maximum of six months from the date of registration.

Phase 1

Includes initial work based analysis and research. This also provides you with an opportunity to research canine body language and different breeds. As part of your learning journey for phase one you’re required to conduct secondary research via the Internet, library and other sources such as books and journals on specific methods used for the conditioning and training of dogs.

The most important question of all is covered in phase one; why train a dog? It’s something we do automatically but why do we do it – why don’t we stop with good manners at home?

The anatomy and physiology of learning are explored as well as different forms of conditioning.

Phase 2

Discusses the three main types of conditioning; operant, classical and... can you guess the third?

How breeding and the various breeds may or may not affect how you would condition a dog are investigated as is motivation.

Phase 3

Is all about buzz words; technical terms or more importantly techniques are explored, not only what they mean but when you would use them and why.

In Phase 4 the theory of conditioning is now behind and it’s on to the theory of training. How would you, using what you’ve learned so far, condition (or train) a dog to various exercises; use of the voice, body language, play, and motivation are discussed as well as the various roles in the dog training profession.
